The blue hour is the twilight hour; the period between light and dark that creates a chromatic effect in a sky which is suffused with an intense blue, which in turn is reflected in the still water of the bay of Salo to create a unique atmosphere. The city of Salo has takes advantage of these special conditions to present the ‘Happy Blue Hour’.

Along the lungalago and in the fossa (the back streets) of the towns historic center the restaurants and bars a expand their space by moving more tables outside. Different styles of music is played by groups and solo artists at regular intervals throughout the town. All of the music styles add to the ambiance which creates the perfect environment for residents and tourists to mingle and chill out alongside each other. A perfect time to take an aperitivo or dine with friends whilst enjoying the magical effects of the ‘happy blue hour’.

There is also the opportunity to do some late night shopping as many of the shops take advantage and stay beyond their normal hours.

Happy Hour Blue is staged every Thursday evening throughout the summer until mid September. It starts at six and finishes around midnight. If you fancy dining on the edge of the lake you’d do well to turn up early or book in advance.

This video was taken from one of my favourite bars Cafe Bloom…..where they prepare an excellent aperitivo and light meal.
