Colin Stetson was born and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Here he learned to play the saxophone, clarinet and flute. He studied music at the University of Michigan and, while still a student, he founded the Transmission with which he made an album in 1999.
The solo debut is in 2003 with SLOW DESCENT.
Colin Stetson has been called the “Roger Federer of avant-garde music” alluding to his ability to see the music in a new way.
The artist (currently based in Canada) has charmed audiences and critics for its original ability to draw, from an instrument with an extreme timbre like the bass sax, sounds with great emotional impact. With the use of circular breathing, voice, microphones, of unconventional techniques, Stetson invented sound spaces where one can find minimalism, post-rock and avant-garde, capturing the listener into a spiral that is hard to resist.
Colin Stetson has worked with Bon Iver, Tom Waits, Arcade Fire, Belle Orchestre, Tv On The Radio, Feist, Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed, David Byrne, Jolie Holland, Sinead O’Connor, LCD Soundsystem, The National, Angelique Kidjo, Anthony Braxton e Mats Gustafsson.
