History of Solferino
SOLFERINO is best known for being close to the site of the Battle of Solferino which took place on 24 June 1859, during the Second Italian War of Independence. The horror of the battle was witnessed by the Swiss businessman and social activist Jean-Henri Dunant, who had come to the area for a meeting with Napolean 3rd. Being totally shocked by the suffering of wounded soldiers left on the battlefield, Dunant began a process that led to the Geneva Conventions and the establishment of the International Red Cross.
